Taurine: A Neuromodulator with Unclear Benefits for Athletes

Taurine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid and a derivative of cysteine which has become a very popular ingredient of many sports and energy drinks over the last few decades. Although it occurs in the human body in high concentrations in the brain, heart and muscles, its exact role still remains partly a mystery to science.

Taurine in energy drinks – effect on sports performance

The biological functions of taurine

Scientific studies suggest that taurine could have an effect in the following areas:

Membrane stabilisation and antioxidant
Taurine is thought to act as a stabiliser of cell membranes and an antioxidant protecting cells from the oxidative stress caused by exercise.
Neuromodulator
In the nervous system it works as a neuromodulator and plays a role in regulating membrane excitability.
Regulation of calcium and cell volume
Taurine influences calcium fluxes in cells and takes part in the regulation of cell volume.
Role in skeletal muscle
A presumed, so far insufficiently proven role in the metabolism of skeletal muscle in humans.
These effects of taurine are still insufficiently researched, above all in the human body, and cannot be taken as definitive.

Taurine and muscle activity

In the context of sports performance, researchers focus on the effect of taurine on skeletal muscle:

Muscle contraction – taurine may influence the excitation and contraction processes of muscle fibres by acting on ion conductance in the membranes (Spriet and Whitfield, 2015).
Glucose metabolism – taurine has been shown to support glucose uptake into the muscles, through higher expression of the glucose transporter GLUT4 and higher levels of insulin signalling factors (Ra, 2022).

A real benefit from supplementation?

Despite the interesting theoretical mechanisms, the real value of taurine as a food supplement for athletes is still ambiguous:

Galloway et al. (2008) – 7 days of taurine supplementation: the results showed that supplementation did not change the taurine content in skeletal muscle and did not affect carbohydrate and fat oxidation during exercise.
A lack of evidence in humans – many of the claimed effects of taurine have not been sufficiently researched in humans and the mechanisms of its action in skeletal muscle remain largely unexplained.

Conclusion for athletes

Taurine is an important substance for physiological processes in the body, especially for muscle and nerve tissue. However, at present there is not enough robust scientific evidence to confirm that supplementing with it leads to a demonstrable improvement in sports performance or a change in muscle metabolism. From the point of view of sports performance, supplementing with taurine is, according to the available information, without effect.
