The recommended daily protein intake for strength-focused athletes usually ranges between 1.6–1.7 g per kilogram of body weight, which is roughly double that of the general population. A higher intake brings no further benefit for muscle growth.

A high-quality protein is defined by its content of all the essential amino acids (EAAs), a sufficient amount of leucine and good digestibility and absorption.

Whey protein, such as hyve Whey Protein, meets all of these conditions: it contains the complete spectrum of EAAs, a high proportion of leucine and is rapidly absorbed, which makes it an ideal choice for supporting muscle growth and recovery, especially after physical exertion. Protein quality is essential above all with a lower total protein intake or in athletes with an irregular eating routine – in these cases it is not only the amount that matters, but also the type of protein consumed.

The importance of protein for endurance athletes

Protein is not only for building muscle mass – in endurance athletes it plays a key role in recovery, the repair of damaged muscle structures and support for the production of mitochondrial proteins, which are essential for the efficient use of energy during prolonged efforts. After training, the muscle environment is set not for an increase in size, but for remodelling and increased resilience, which requires enough available amino acids, especially leucine.

A rapidly absorbed protein such as whey is the ideal choice for speeding up recovery and improving adaptation processes. An intake of about 20 g of protein after training is recommended, and then every 2–3 hours, optionally together with carbohydrates for more complete recovery.

Muscle growth and muscle protein synthesis

The amino acids from protein stimulate muscle protein synthesis in a dose-dependent way, but only up to a certain point – research shows that the optimal dose for maximum stimulation of MPS (muscle protein synthesis) is around 0.25–0.4 g of protein per kg of body weight per serving, i.e. for example 20–30 g for an athlete weighing 75 kg.
