The Achilles tendon, a key element for the mobility and flexibility of the foot, can be prone to various levels of injury. From mild injuries (strains) to serious ruptures, the recovery time can differ considerably. This article provides a detailed overview of how long it takes for the Achilles tendon to heal, taking into account the degree of injury and recommendations for convalescence. We have written about other specific types of injury to the Achilles tendon and the ankle in a separate article.

Degrees of injury and healing time

Mild injury - a strain

  • Length of treatment: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Convalescence: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Return to full load: 4 to 6 weeks

A mild strain of the Achilles tendon is usually treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation (the RICE method). Physical therapy can help speed up the healing process.

Moderate - a partial tear

  • Length of treatment: 4 to 8 weeks
  • Convalescence: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Return to full load: 8 to 12 weeks

A moderate injury may require more intensive treatment, including physical therapy and potentially orthopaedic support.

Complete rupture - tendon rupture

  • Length of treatment: 6 to 12 months
  • Convalescence: 4 to 6 months
  • Return to full load: 9 to 12 months

A complete rupture of the Achilles tendon is a serious injury that often requires surgery. The answer to how long the Achilles tendon takes to heal will therefore differ from case to case, but will typically range between 6-12 months. Rehabilitation is key to full recovery and involves a combination of physical therapy, exercise and a gradual increase in load.1,2,3
